Oversuit vs jacket + pants: which type to buy

Motorcycle rainwear comes in two configurations. The right choice depends on how you ride.

One-piece oversuit (Regenkombi / combinaison de pluie)

A single piece that goes over your entire riding outfit. No gap between jacket and trousers — water cannot enter at the waist, which is the main failure point of two-piece setups. Packs into its own bag. Best choice for touring riders who need reliable all-day rain protection. Slightly awkward to put on at the roadside. Look for full-length zips or leg zips that allow pulling on without removing boots.

Two-piece (rain jacket + rain trousers)

Separate over-jacket and over-trousers. Easier to put on selectively — if only your upper body is getting wet, you can use just the jacket. The gap at the waist is a weak point: in sustained heavy rain, water runs down the jacket and into the trouser waistband. Good two-piece sets solve this with a long rain jacket or trouser bib. Easier to store in different bag locations.

Waterproofing ratings: what the numbers mean

Waterproofing is measured in hydrostatic head (HH) — the height of a water column the fabric can withstand before leaking. For motorcycle use at speed, rain hits the fabric at higher effective pressure than standing still.

Under 5,000mm HH	Water-resistant only. Will fail in sustained rain or at motorway speeds. Not suitable as sole rain protection.
5,000–10,000mm HH	Adequate for light to moderate rain on short trips. Budget rainwear typically falls here.
10,000–20,000mm HH	Good performance in heavy rain. Suitable for touring. Most mid-range motorcycle rainwear.
20,000mm+ HH	Excellent. Handles extended downpours at motorway speeds. Premium materials (Gore-Tex, Dermizax). Will outlast cheaper alternatives significantly.

Seams matter as much as the fabric

A 20,000mm HH fabric with non-taped seams will leak at the stitch lines. Look for fully taped or critically taped seams on any rainwear you intend to use in sustained rain. Budget gear often has untaped seams despite good fabric ratings.

What the cheap stuff gets wrong

Sub-€40 motorcycle rain gear (available everywhere from petrol stations to hypermarkets) consistently fails in the same ways:

Untaped seams — water leaks through stitch holes within minutes of sustained rain.
No leg zips — impossible to put on without removing boots. Many riders give up and ride wet rather than stop to undress.
No reflective material — rain typically means reduced visibility. Budget gear rarely includes meaningful reflectivity.
Thin material that tears on first contact with seat edges, luggage mounting points, or foot controls. One-season lifespan.

A €80–€120 oversuit with leg zips and taped seams will outlast three €35 emergency ponchos and actually keep you dry. The maths usually favour buying once.

Packability: will it actually fit in your bag?

Motorcycle rainwear that does not travel with you is useless. Pack sizes vary enormously:

Ultra-compact — some oversuits pack to 1–1.5L. These live in a jacket pocket or tank bag and are always with you. Tend to be thinner material.
Mid-pack — 2–4L packed. Fits in a tail bag pocket or top box. Practical for touring.
Bulky (5L+) — typically heavier-duty gear with more robust seam construction. Usually not packed in a stuff sack at all. For riders who leave it strapped to the bike permanently.

Most manufacturers provide packed dimensions — check them before buying if space is limited.
