Tank bags, panniers, top boxes, tail bags — what each type is for, what to look for in waterproofing and mounting, and how to compare prices across EU retailers.
The four luggage types and what they are actually for
Motorcycle luggage falls into four broad categories, and choosing the wrong type is the most common mistake riders make. Each has a different job.
Tank bags (5–28L)
Sit on the fuel tank. Best for day trips and commuting — easy to access at stops, good for navigation devices, wallets, snacks. Magnetic bags work on metal tanks only; strap/harness bags work on any tank including plastic. Downside: interfere with full body lean on sportsbikes.
Panniers / side cases (20–60L each)
Hard or soft cases that mount on the sides of the bike. Hard cases (aluminium or ABS plastic) are waterproof and secure but heavy and expensive. Soft panniers are lighter and pack down when empty. Require a frame or rack — check your bike's compatibility before buying.
Top boxes / top cases (28–58L)
Mount on the rear rack above the pillion seat. Hard-shell, lockable, often accept a passenger backrest attachment. Most popular choice for city commuting and touring. The 58L models fit two full-face helmets. Require a matching rack — sold separately in most cases.
Tail bags / seat bags (10–35L)
Strap to the pillion seat or luggage rack. No rack required. Most versatile across different bikes. Quality varies enormously — cheap ones shift and wear through the seat. Look for bags with anti-slip bases and multiple strap attachment points.
Waterproofing: the numbers that matter
Motorcycle luggage is exposed to rain at motorway speeds — conditions that defeat most "water-resistant" gear. There are three levels to know:
- Not waterproof — no rating, no cover included. Fine for dry climates or short trips. If caught in rain, contents will get wet.
- Water-resistant — handles light rain for short periods. Most magnetic tank bags fall here. Rain covers are sometimes included; buy one separately if not.
- Waterproof — welded seams, waterproof zips or roll-top closure. Brands like Kriega use welded construction and lifetime waterproof guarantees. Expect to pay significantly more, but contents stay dry through extended riding in heavy rain.
Tip: check the zip type
Standard coil zips are the weak point on most luggage. Waterproof zips (branded as YKK Aquaguard or equivalent) add cost but are worth it for touring bags. Roll-top closures used by drybag-style designs (Kriega, Ortlieb) are the most reliably waterproof.
Mounting systems: what fits your bike
Hard panniers and top boxes require a frame or rack specific to your bike model. Before buying a Givi, SW-Motech, or Hepco & Becker system, confirm:
- The brand's website lists a frame for your exact bike model and year
- The cases are compatible with that brand's rack system (Givi cases on Givi racks, Monolock vs Monokey systems)
- Whether the frame is sold separately or bundled with the case
Soft luggage using strap systems is more universal but requires careful routing to avoid contact with hot exhausts, moving parts, or rear wheel. Always check there is clearance after loading — a heavy bag can sag several centimetres.

Motorcycle luggage prices vary substantially between EU retailers — especially for hard cases and quality soft panniers. A 37L top box can range from €120 to €280 depending on the retailer.
